Self Funded Care

Self-funded care means paying for your care services independently, without financial help from the council. Whether by choice or due to your financial situation, this option allows you to select the care that best suits your needs.

What is Self-funded care?

Self-funded care refers to a situation where an individual pays for their own care services without financial assistance from the government or local council.

This typically applies when a person’s savings or assets exceed a certain threshold, making them ineligible for public funding. In self-funded care, the individual is responsible for covering the full cost of their care, whether it’s in a care home, through home care services, or other types of care and support they might need.

Are you eligible for Self-funded Care?

If you have savings over £23,250 – known as the upper capital limit (UCL) – or if you own your own property and are planning to move into a care home, you won’t be eligible for financial assistance from your local council.

However, you can request a financial assessment (means test) from your council to see if you might qualify for any support with care costs.

If you prefer, you can choose to pay for your care independently without undergoing a financial assessment.
